Status of Kentucky Bridges
This map shows the status of every bridge in Kentucky and includes when it was inspected, year built, and daily vehicle traffic. The status can be Structurally Deficient, Functionally Obsolete, Not Deficient or Not Applicable, and each bridge is also given an overall rating from 1-100%, with 100 being the best. This map plots information from the National Bridge Inventory on the Federal Highway Administration site. Created here August 6, 2007.

Key:
Not Deficient
Structurally Deficient
Functionally Obsolete
Not Applicable
Status Definitions

Structurally Deficient: If one of the 3 elements (see below) receives a 4 or lower inspection rating (0 = failed, 9= excellent), the bridge is considered structurally deficient, according to Kentucky transportation officials. Engineers say structurally deficient bridges are not necessarily in danger of collapsing, but they do need attention.

Functionally Obsolete: A functionally obsolete bridge does not meet current design standards. For example, its lanes might be narrower than what would be required if the bridge were being built today.

Rating Definition

Sufficiency Rating: Bridges are given a sufficiency rating expressed as a percentage, with 100 being the highest. A bridge that is structurally deficient or functionally obsolete and receives a sufficiency rating of less than 80 will be eligible for federal rehabilitation funds; bridges with a rating of less than 50 are eligible for replacement or rehabilitation funds.

Bridge Elements

The deck: Includes the roadway, drains, sidewalks and railings.

The superstructure: Supports the deck and includes the trusses and horizontal connecting beams, or chords.

The substructure: Supports the superstructure and includes the piers and abutments.
